About CompressToKB
CompressToKB exists because of one stubborn sentence: "Your photo must be between 20 KB and 50 KB." It appears on millions of application forms, and until you have fought a 4 MB phone photo down to that window with a generic editor, you do not know how annoying it is.
This site does one job: you name the size, it produces a file of that size. The compressor works backwards from your target, searching encoder quality — and, only when necessary, dimensions — until the output fits. It handles batches, because applications never ask for exactly one file, and it packs the results into a ZIP, because downloading twelve files one by one is its own small punishment.
Everything runs locally in your browser. The site was built that way on purpose: the images people compress to form sizes are passport photos, signatures and ID scans — precisely the files that should never be uploaded to a stranger's server just to change their byte count.
Part of a small tool family
CompressToKB is one of a set of free, single-purpose tools built and maintained by the same small studio. Its closest sibling is PhotoIDMaker, which crops photos to official passport and ID sizes for dozens of countries — make the photo the right shape there, then bring it here to make it the right weight. The full family is listed in the footer of every page.
Honesty notes
- The compressor's method is documented on the how it works page — including where its limits are.
- Size limits quoted on this site are typical ranges gathered from common application instructions; your form's own rules are the only ones that count.
- A Pro tier with saved portal profiles is planned at $9/month. It is not on sale yet, and the free tool is not a trial of it.
